About the Director
Douglas Hart was the bass guitarist and founding member of the Scottish band The Jesus and Mary Chain, and played with the group from 1984 to 1991. While in the band, Hart started to direct music videos for other acts. He went on to found his own video company and has directed over 80 music videos. His work includes promos for The Pet Shop Boys, Pete Doherty, The Libertines, The Horrors, Paul Weller, Spiritualized, Primal Scream, as well as concert videos for Stone Roses... Amongst his most recent work, Hart directed an 8 minute music video for The Horrors “Sea Within A Sea”. In 1991, Hart made a BBC promo about the greatest football team of all time, that opened the BBC’s themed football night. The film used rarely seen archive footage and original music to capture the atmosphere of flair, power and sex. He also collaborated with dancer Gaby Agis to make a short film written by Kate Pullinger, that combined dance and drama. More recently, Hart directed a 25 minute documentary that aired on Channel 4 in 2010, about the surviving members of the Manic Street Preachers. The film follows them as they embark on making an album based on the poetry and notebooks left to them by their former band mate Richie, before he took his life. Hart’s latest short film, Long Distance Information, is his first drama, a dark comedy exploring the relationship between a father (Peter Mullan) and his son (Alan Tripney).
