Program Notes
In October 1942, Esther Stermer, the matriarch of a Jewish family in the Ukraine, leads her family underground to hide from the pursuing Nazis—and stays nearly a year and a half. Their harrowing story of survival living in near total darkness in two cold, damp caves is one like no other ever told. NO PLACE ON EARTH is a beautifully rendered, seamlessly woven documentary, unspooling through well-crafted reenactments and amazing first-person accounts of the family’s survival.
2012 Hampton International Film Festival Audience Award Winner for Best Documentary
About the Director
Tobias started her career at CBS’ 60 Minutes as Diane Sawyer's associate producer. After a short stint away from the networks to write a feature film screenplay, Tobias returned to NBC and moved into management at Dateline NBC. As a national producer at Dateline NBC, she supervised pieces on medical ethics and the home health care industry. She continued her directing and writing career with a four hour joint PBS Frontline/ ABC Nightline project on the juvenile justice system in California. The feature length documentary, Juvenile Justice, won an American Bar Association silver gavel award. In 2001, she launched Life 360, a weekly PBS series that combined documentary pieces with dramatic and comic monologues. Life 360 launched just after 9/11 to laudatory reviews and won an Emmy in its first season. Tobias is directing/writing/producing a film for worldwide theatrical release (History Films, Global Screen), followed by worldwide television broadcast (ARD-Germany, Channel 5 Great Britain, History Channel USA) on the longest ever recorded uninterrupted survival underground in a cave. In addition to her National Emmy and American Bar Association awards, other awards include: 2 Cine Golden Eagles, the George Foster Peabody Award, 2 Casey medals for meritorious journalism, a National Headliner Award, a Sigma Delta Chi Award, and honorable mention Robert F. Kennedy Journalism and Overseas Press Awards. Ms. Tobias is a member of the Writers Guild of America.
