As part of the “green cart initiative” started by the City Council, these vendors achieve this dream by selling fruits and vegetables in the “food deserts” of the Big Apple. These vendors are not only carving out an economic niche for themselves but are counteracting the high rates of obesity and diabetes in the City’s low-income communities.
