Program Notes
Get Low is based on the true story—and American folktale—of Felix “Bush” Breazeale, played in an outstanding performance by Robert Duvall. The film follows this backwoods recluse as he rides to town with a shotgun and a wad of cash and announces his intention to stage a “living funeral,” where anyone who has heard a story about him is welcome to tell it. Fast-talking funeral home owner Frank Quinn (a dazzling Bill Murray) attempts to win Breazeale’s business and discovers that the man is keeping a long-held secret that must get out. As the funeral approaches, the mystery—which involves widow Maddie Darrow (Sissy Spacek) and preacher Charlie Jackson (Bill Cobbs)— deepens. On the big day, Bush is in no mood to listen to people spinning tales about him. He’s determined to do the telling himself, and to reveal, finally, why he has been hiding in the woods.
